Insurance for visitors to Canada tourists
Why Visitors to Canada Need Health Insurance
- Coverage for Medical Emergencies: If a person is injured or falls ill, the health insurance will cover the cost of visiting a clinic or hospital and will also pay for emergency medical services. If a doctor prescribes medication, the insurance will cover it up to a certain limit. Additionally, if a person experiences a dental issue, the insurance offers limited coverage (depending on the plan) for dental treatment.
- Return to Home Country: If a person needs to urgently return to their home country for treatment because treatment in Canada is not feasible or available, the insurance company will cover the costs of return travel (up to a certain amount).
- Death: If a person dies, the insurance covers the cost of returning the deceased (up to a certain amount).
- Additional Expenses: In some cases, insurance companies provide extra money for "pocket expenses" in addition to covering medical services.
What Insurance Does Not Cover
- Long-Term Treatment: It does not cover ongoing long-term treatments, such as cancer treatment.
- Medication Refills: It does not cover the cost of refilling medications that the person was taking before arriving.
- Pre-existing Conditions: If a person had known medical issues and purchased insurance without coverage for pre-existing conditions, the insurance will not cover those known issues.
Procedure in Case of a Claim
In case of a medical emergency that is not life-threatening, you should first contact the insurance company to explain the medical issue. They will open a claim file, and only after that should you see a doctor.
- Clinic Visits: If visiting a clinic, you will usually need to pay the doctor’s fees upfront and then submit the payment receipt to the insurance company for reimbursement.
- Hospital Stays: Most hospitals will send the bill after the fact, and the insurance company will handle the payment.
Important Information
- Documentation: If admitted to a hospital, always collect information about the doctor (name, surname) and copies of all documents and tests performed. While not mandatory, this will make the insurance claim process easier.
- Hospital Costs: The cost of hospital stays varies by province, hospital, and medical services provided. Without insurance, you would need to pay these expenses yourself.
- Admission: Approximately $1,000.
- Daily Hospital Stay: About $5,000-$7,000 per day.
- ICU Stay: Often $10,000+ per day.
- Ambulance: Around $500-$700.
- Dental Work: Extracting a tooth or getting a filling costs about $500.
- Clinic Visit: Approximately $150.
- Deductibles: If you choose a deductible when purchasing insurance, you will pay for medical services up to that amount yourself. Any costs exceeding this amount will be covered by the insurance.
- Payment Plans: Some insurers offer the option to pay for insurance in installments, usually if the coverage amount is significant (typically $100,000) and the stay in Canada is long-term (usually a year).
- Early Departure: If you leave Canada earlier than planned (before the insurance policy expires) and have not made any claims, you can request a refund for the unused days. The exact process varies by insurance company; some provide a refund from the day they receive the request, while others may refund from the day you left.
